The association Musique Sacrée à Notre-Dame de Paris was created in 1991 by the Archdiocese of Paris, Ministry of Culture and City of Paris. This decision was based on the ambition to consolidate the excellence of the secular musical practice attached to the important place of French history that is Notre-Dame Cathedral.
The association promotes the transmission of the musical heritage of the Notre-Dame Cathedral through the training of singers (150 students from 5 to 30 years old), the organization of concerts and recitals, and the liturgic animation of the Cathedral. It also plays an important role in the creation of new musical works and in their circulation.
One of the consequences of the fire in 2019 was to immediately render its magnificent choir, the Maîtrise of Notre-Dame, homeless. The choir, which has filled and inspired this gothic marvel for over 850 years, was left without its stage for the first time in history. This event, compounded by the pandemic, challenged the Maîtrise’s leadership, staff, adults and children to keep its musical traditions and educational programs alive.
With tenacity and will, the Maîtrise has adapted, performing as visiting choirs in new venues in France and Western Europe.
Now, as they plan their return to the Cathedral, they are embarking upon a US Tour. The goal is to inspire new audiences, share their music, and engage new supporters. They will perform with other choirs and share educational experiences in these various places
